The old woman passed away, leaving the old man alone.
The old man couldn't get excited about anything. The days passed like this day by day.
One morning, the old man said to himself: "I really want to drink hot soup! I really want to drink the meatball soup that grandma cooked for me."

So the old man decided to make the soup by himself. He remembered the meatball soup song that his grandmother sang when she was making soup. However, the old man couldn't remember all the lyrics at the moment. Every time he cooked and tasted it, he always felt that the taste was not right.
"The meatball soup is ready." The old man would say this every time as soon as he finished cooking the soup. What was interesting was that the sound of small footsteps would immediately sound outside the door. Rats, cats, puppies and children came one after another smelling the fragrance, and finally shared the freshly cooked hot soup with the old man. For them, the pot the grandpa used to cook soup became bigger and bigger; the grandpa’s home became more and more lively because of this!

Eiko Kadono (かどのえいこ)
was born in Tokyo and graduated from Waseda University. He once worked in a publishing house and lived in Brazil for two years since 1960. After returning to China, he began to create picture books, fairy tales, etc. There are many works, including: "My Mother Jing" (Kaiseisha), "The Story of Captain Pants", "Kiki's Delivery Service" (Gospel Museum) and so on. He has won the Noma Children's Literature Award, the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award, the Roadside Stone Literature Award, etc.

老奶奶過世了，留下老爺爺孤孤單單的一個人。
老爺爺做什麼事都提不起勁。日子就這麼一天一天的過去。
有天早上，老爺爺自言自語的說：「好想喝熱湯哪！真想喝老奶奶為我煮的肉丸子湯啊。」
於是，老爺爺決定自己動手煮湯。他想起了老奶奶煮湯時唱的肉丸子湯歌，決定按照歌裡的材料和步驟，試著自己煮一鍋好湯。
但是，老爺爺一時實在記不起全部的歌詞，每次煮好、嘗了，總覺得味道不太對勁，只好一次又一次的慢慢回想歌詞，一次又一次的上市場買材料、試著重新再煮煮看。
「肉丸子湯煮好嘍。」每回老爺爺一煮完湯就會這麼說，有趣的是，門外也會立刻響起小小的腳步聲。老鼠啦、貓咪啦、小狗和小孩們，陸陸續續聞香而來，最後和老爺爺一起分享剛煮好的熱湯。為了他們，老爺爺煮湯的鍋子也愈換愈大；老爺爺的家，也因此愈來愈熱鬧！

作者簡介
角野榮子(かどの えいこ)
出生於東京，早稻田大學畢業。曾任職於出版社，1960年起旅居巴西兩年。歸國後開始創作圖畫書和童話等等。作品數量眾多，包括：《我的媽媽阿靜》（偕成社）、《褲子船長的故事』》、《魔女宅急便』（福音館）等等。曾獲野間兒童文藝獎、產經兒童出版文化獎、路傍之石文學獎等等。
繪者簡介
市川里美(いちかわさとみ)
出生於岐阜縣，1971年移居巴黎。之後自學繪畫，溫柔的筆觸描繪出栩栩如生的兒童與自然風景，風格獨具。作品包括：《聽見春天之歌』》、《快跑！阿倫』》、《強恩的動物醫院』（偕成社）等。曾獲講談社出版文化繪本獎、產經兒童出版文化美術獎。
